IWPSE99
International Workshop on the Principles of Software Evolution

Fukuoka Software Research Park, Fukuoka City, Japan
July 16 and 17, 1999

In cooperation with:
ACM SIGSOFT
Japanese Society for Software Science and Technology
Institute of Systems and Information Technologies / KYUSHU

Supported by:

Grant-in-Aid for Priority Areas, Ministry of Education, Japan "Principles for Constructing Evolutionary Software", and
Research for the Future Program JSPS-RFTF,"Software Development Methodology"

The International Workshop on the Principles of Software Evolution, IWPSE99 is organized as a successor of IWPSE98 held in 1998 in conjunction with ICSE98 as a forum for discussing principles and fundamental aspects of software evolution. Software evolution is widely recognized as one of the most important problems in software engineering. Despite the significant amount of work that has been done, there are still fundamental problems to be solved. The purpose of this workshop is to discuss principles and mechanisms for software evolution. Topics discussed include, though not limited to,

principles of evolution:

theories of evolution, computational models, empirical study of evolution, principles of architectural/design/implementation evolution, design methodologies for evolutionary system

mechanisms to support evolution:

adaptation and reconfiguration, language and system constructs, processes/methods/tools for evolution, analysis and reasoning, inconsistency management, change implication and propagation, evolution across families and versions, evolution in network/web-based development.

Fukuoka City
A city of history, nature and the future

Fukuoka City is the main port of entry to Kyushu Island, the southwest main island of Japan. It has one of the most convenient international airport, only 10 minutes by subway from the city center. It has domestic flights to many local cities in Kyushu Island as well as to almost all the major cities in Japan, such as Tokyo (1'30"), Osaka (1'00"), Sapporo (2'00") etc. It is also the closest Japanese city to Asian continent with many international regular flights, e.g., Seoul (1'00"), Shanghai (1'30"), Hong Kong (3'00") etc.

Fukuoka City is the largest city with a population of 1.3 million and the modern leading city of economy, politics and culture in Kyushu Island. It has a long history of more than two thousand years, and is also called Hakata, a historical center of commerce. There are many historical places such as Shofukuji Temple, the first Zen Buddhism temple in Japan, Kushida Shrine, the general tutelary shrine in Hakata, and many old temples and shrines. Besides, there are also many modern places, such as Canal City Hakata (complex of shopping center, theaters, hotels and amusement park), Fukuoka Dome Stadium, Hakata-za Theater, a new Kabuki Theater, Seaside Momochi Area, and so on.

Fukuoka is famous for delicious foods such as fresh fish and Hakata Ramen noodle. People in Fukuoka are very friendly and open-minded because of the long history of Fukuoka City as a gateway between Japan and the Asian Continent. You may enjoy the hospitality of Fukuoka People e.g., at a bar in Nakasu, the largest entertainment area in western Japan.

Hakata Gion Yamakasa Festival
http://www.yamakasa.org/

Just before the workshop, Hakata is excited with one of the largest festivals in Japan, Hakata Gion Yamakasa Festival from July 1 to the early morning on July 15. During the festival, beautiful tall floats, Kazariyama, decorated with beautiful dolls are set up at various places in the downtown area. Seven racing floats are rushing along the streets daily on July 10-15. The climax of the festival is the Oiyama race in the very early morning on July 15. At 4:59 a.m., the first racing float starts from the Kushida Shrine and runs about 5km long by about 30 minutes. Every five minutes the other 6 racing floats start to follow the previous float. This festival attracts a huge number of people (about 800 thousand) to watch this race in the early morning. If you come to Fukuoka a few days earlier than the workshop, you will be able to enjoy this exciting festival.

Workshop Site - Fukuoka Software Research Park

There are three hotels near the workshop site; SeaHawk Hotel & Resort, Hyatt Residential Suites, and Twins Momochi.

The local arrangement organizer recommends Hyatt Residential Suites because of the cooperation on the workshop. Though it is a residential hotel (so a bed-making service is extra), you will be welcome if you inform them of "IWPSE'99" in booking.

At Fukuoka City downtown areas, you will find many hotels. From those hotels at downtown, you will get to the workshop site directly by bus. The bus fare is 220 JPYen. Please contact with the hotels and make a reservation by yourself.
